Redlining drawings using Wiimote Smoothboard

Project:
Using Wiimote and Projector to Redline drawing submittals.
Based on Johnny Lee Wiimote tracking and Boon Jin's Smoothboard.

Issue:
I wanted to experiment the possibility of Redlining Shop drawing submitals using the computer directly as more and more submitals are sent to us as PDF's. Typically the process is to print the drawings out and mark them up and rescan and send them back. This process wastes paper which is not good for the environment and takes more time and cost of rescanning has to be considered as a lot of submittals are 24x36 or larger. Though the process of marking up paper is prefered by the users as they are used to using a pen and marking on paper.

Few Solutions:
1. Use a Wacom board - Problem is that the eye hand coordination is not that great, i.e looking at screen and drawing with hand. (Just needs getting used to is the answer.
2. Use the mouse - Again people are not used to it
3. Use the Wacom Monitor or tablet Pc's = High cost

I thought to experiment with the Wiimote as it seemed a low cost option since we already have a projector in the office and a computer with bluetooth functionality. Plus I wanted to try playing with the Wiimote and smoothboard.:D

The experiment:

First I started with Front projection and trying different things, but the problem was that I kept blocking the view unless I have a ceiling mounted solution, but even with that the view would be blocked.

So I thought why not try Rear projection but the problem was how am I going to get the wiimote to read the infrared signal through the surface? The answer was cheap, just a 20lb sheet of paper.

I went down to the basement of our office and found an unused picture frame and I drapped the paper over it. I projected the image on the frame with paper drapped over it and to my amazment the contraption worked.

Rear Projection Wiimote Setup
The video explains the setup a lot better.

My next experiment will be creating a "Light Table" using this setup

Fantastic proof of concept!! I tried to look up http://peninteractive.us and it didn't seem to exist. Is there a different address for the infrared pen you used?

Good job!!
