I got my new Lenovo W510 820QM 4319-2RU I was so excited, but......
well the first one died within an hour. The second one within 4 weeks. I was not happy.
We ordered 3 units back in April and finally got them in June. They have been on back order for the longest time. Now I am thinking why? Cause they are dying so much? We were given excuses from processor shortage to HD screen not being available. I think they have serious issues thats why. Let me clarify that the 2RU model comes with the Intel i7-820QM processor as comared to the 2NU model which has the i7-720QM processor. We have quite a few 720QM's and not had any issues, just the 820QM's seem to overheat and freeze. They are blowing out SO MUCH heat from the vent that you can burn your hand.
The 4319-2RU has really nice specs for the price: $2049 and that is why were ordered them.
i7-820QM, 4GB RAM, FULL HD screen (with Multitouch, not sure for what? will explain later), 320GB 7200RPMHD.
So let me get back to the problem in hand. The first unit was barely in service for an hour and it started freezing up, randomly. Every time it froze the vent was giving out extreme heat. I shut it down, powered it back up and no go. Waited about 10 min, still no go. After an hour it finally booted up again and barely lasted half hour before it froze and repeated the same no boot even to post. Called Lenovo and they sent the box, returned to them and 5 days later was told that the part is on back order. I called back few days later and was told part was on back order. The interesting thing was that the tech agent hadling the call said, oh yah, we have had a lot of calls on this part being back-order. Apparantly I am not the only one in this boat.
W510 Heat problems
Well it took them a few weeks to get the machine back to me and the replacement part inside was some thermal something. I do not remember the workorder.
I have also noticed that the machine starts slowing down sometimes, especially when I am working in Revit or Navisworks and in 3D. The machine runs hot and my screen refreshes are so slow, it becomes un-workable at times. Could it be the Graphics card getting too hot? Not sure.
I started using my other machine and it is doing the exact same thing as the first one. It has frozen on me four times today already, sometimes within 10mins of startup to couple hours. I had an important client meeting and had to make backup plans as the machine would not cooperate. Lenovo is sending me a box next week to send back to depot.
So to make this story short, something is seriouly WRONG with the W510 4319-2RU models. I have a 720QM model that I am going to fall back on for the time being. I just do not trust these anymore.
PS: As for the multi-touch screen. Well its pretty much worthless for me. It is only finger sensitive. You cannot use a stylus on it, which would have been GREAT for redlines, and Naviswork markups.
